Jagalchi Fish Festival
The Jagalchi Fish Festival has been going on all week. We went down on Saturday, and it was quite the scene. Fish vendors all over the place. Ajimas (old women) manned their stations and called out for us to buy all kinds of oddities, such as shark heads and squid and floppidy things I’d never even seen before. We also saw what looked like an auction for a boa constrictor.
Jagalchi station is right on the wharf, so we were able to see some of the fishermen at work. A lot of them stared at us, but others pandered to the
camera. Brittany and I ended up having a nice meal right on the
water, where we ate “fish,” which was as detailed as we could get our waitress to do, dipped in a spicy red sauce and then wrapped in leaves, Galbi style.
Jagalchi is also right next to Nampo-dong, which is the large shopping district in Busan. It has tons of high fashion stores right next to cheap vendor stalls. I’ve also noticed that there are many stores that only sell one item. For example, a key and lock shop. The kimchee shop. The metal scrap shop. Rake shop. What if no one needs a key that day? How do they make money all the time? It was a lot of fun, and I hope to return to Nampo-dong soon to do some touristy-shopping.
