Marcha de La Paz (March for Peace)
On April 9, thousands of Colombians took to the streets to show their desire for peace in their country. Most people are aware of the armed conflict that has negatively impacted this beautiful place for decades, but they do not always see the people working against this violence. The purpose of the march was to encourage resolutions between the Colombian government and the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia - a guerrilla movement in place since the 1960s) and to show solidarity for all those who have lost their lives due to violence.
Bogota is no stranger to marches and protests, both violent and nonviolent. In fact, I hear about them with regularity. What makes this march interesting is that it was organized on Calle 26...just outside my house. As a result, I was able to walk through a minor section on my way to work. I was really moved by the signs advocating peace and unity, and the many pictures of those who have been killed or who "disappeared" throughout the years.
I have loved my time in Colombia so much, and I really hope that progress is made. Here are a few of my personal photos of the day.

Riot troops were in place.
Waving flags and banners.
A deserted Calle 26, a rare sight indeed, as the roads are closed off in preparation.
