Halo Halo

Halo Halo is the Filipino dessert that I am kind of obsessed with. It's a bit strange at first sight, and I admit I was a little unsure of it the first time I had it, but it sure grows on you fast! The ingredients include shaved ice, cream, and an assortment of bizzare toppings such as ube (purple yam), red mung beans, grabanzo beans, sugar palm fruit (kaong), buko (young coconut), banana, nuts, various gelatin, plus whatever other fruits or ingredients they have laying around.

Then you mix everything together until it resembles purple sludge. The term "halo halo" actually means 'mix mix." It's an instructional food, just in case you get confused :) You can get a big bowl of it for only 35 pesos (like $.75). I actually didn't take this picture - I got it offline, but it was difficult to sort through all the beautiful artistic renditions of halo halo! This is the most authentic I could find, low class all the way! I'm positive it tastes better this way.
