Tunes I Love

Music is very important here in the Philippines. Just walk down the street and you hear music blaring, or someone singing off key in Tagalog or English. Many of the restaurants have live music every night, including Sea Slugs. Sometimes I get a bit tired of hearing the Beatles, Bob Marley, and Coldplay, but I've also been introduced to some really great Filipino songs. Here are a couple I particularly enjoy...I hope you do too!

The first one is "Anak" by Freddie Aguilar. He is one of the most well known singers here, and this song was an international hit as well as the number one Filipino hit of all time! "Anak" means child in Filipino, and the song is a tale of remorse and apology to one's parents. It's breathtakingly beautiful, and I always love it when someone performs it well here.

The second song is "Torete" by Moonstar 88. If there is a female singer available (which is actually not so common in El Nido at the moment) they inevitably sing this song, and I'm happy! I'm thinking of trying to learn the words so I can wow everyone at Karaoke night! : -) From what I can tell, "torete" means "confused" or thereabouts, and the song is about a girl confused and lost in love. So Filipino!
